A 19-year-old worked out how stars die on a boat ride

Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar solved the fate of dying stars during his 1930 voyage from India to Cambridge — and was mocked for it.

In the summer of 1930, a 19-year-old physicist named Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar boarded a ship from India bound for graduate school in Cambridge, England. Somewhere on that crossing, working mostly from memory and a stack of borrowed physics, he worked out a number: roughly 1.4 times the mass of the Sun.

Below that mass, he calculated, a dying star could settle into a stable white dwarf, held up against its own gravity by the quantum pressure of tightly packed electrons. Above it, that pressure wouldn't be enough. The star would keep collapsing — toward something physics at the time had no comfortable name for.

It took five years for the physics establishment to even engage with the idea, and when it did, the reception was brutal. Arthur Eddington, the most famous astrophysicist in Britain and a man Chandrasekhar considered a mentor, stood up at a 1935 Royal Astronomical Society meeting and publicly dismissed the result as a mathematical trick nature would surely find a way to avoid. Chandrasekhar had no comparable standing to fight back with.

Eddington was wrong, and stayed wrong until his death in 1944. Chandrasekhar's number is now simply called the Chandrasekhar limit, the dividing line between a stable stellar remnant and the road toward a neutron star or black hole. He won his Nobel Prize in 1983, forty-eight years and one long, cold vindication later.
