Ask an octopus to reach for something and its arm might answer first

Two-thirds of an octopus's neurons live outside its head — which raises an uncomfortable question about where the thinking happens.

Try picturing where an octopus keeps its mind. Not a trick question — just point to it. Most people point at the space between the eyes, where the brain sits. That's true, but it's the smaller truth.

An octopus has roughly 500 million neurons, in the same range as a dog. Only about a third of them are in the central brain. The rest — some 350 million — are distributed through the eight arms, each carrying its own nerve cord dense enough that researchers half-jokingly call them minibrains. Cut an arm free and it will still reach, grip, and recoil from a pinch on its own, no signal from the head required.

In lab mazes, an octopus can learn to push one specific arm toward a food reward it can't see or feel with any other limb — and the memory of that choice, oddly, still lives centrally enough that a fresh, untrained arm can act on it later. So the arms aren't eight separate animals bolted together. They're something stranger: mostly autonomous, but still checking in.

Maybe intelligence was never one throne. Maybe it's a committee that occasionally remembers to vote.
