Night shift work is a probable carcinogen
The World Health Organization put it in the same category as red meat. Not because of what shift workers do, but because of when they do it.
Every cell in your body runs on a roughly twenty-four-hour clock. These clocks govern when hormones peak, when DNA repair runs most actively, when the gut lining rebuilds itself, and when skin cells divide. A master clock in the brain synchronises all the peripheral clocks through light signals detected by specialised cells in the retina. When the system is aligned, each process happens at the moment it is best suited for.
Night shift work severs that synchronisation. The brain receives light signals telling it daytime has arrived; the gut, heart, and liver are still running on a schedule tuned for darkness. When this misalignment persists for years, the downstream effects accumulate: elevated risk of metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease, and several types of cancer. The World Health Organization classifies night shift work as a Group 2A probable carcinogen.
Circadian biologist Satchin Panda at the Salk Institute has shown that even small disruptions compound. Shifting sleep by two hours for a single night takes two to three days to correct. Anyone who sleeps later on weekends than on weekdays is, by a strict definition, giving themselves weekly jet lag. His research also found that confining meals to a consistent ten-to-twelve-hour window improved sleep, blood pressure, and energy levels in participants—even when their diet and calorie intake were unchanged.
