Scott Young finished MIT's computer science curriculum in twelve months
He did it without enrolling, without a professor, and without a single class. What he found afterward was stranger than what he expected.
In October 2011, Scott Young began working through MIT's four-year computer science curriculum using only materials publicly available online — lecture videos, textbooks, and past exams. He finished in September 2012, just under twelve months.
He was working sixty hours a week at the start, later closer to thirty-five. He received no degree, no credit, no transcript. What he received was a fairly rigorous test of whether the substance of an elite technical education can be replicated outside its institutional container.
His conclusion, detailed later in his book Ultralearning, was that most of the value in a difficult education comes from the learning itself — the problems solved, the feedback received, the confusion endured until it resolves — and that the credential attached to that learning is a separate question from whether the learning occurred.
This is not an argument against universities. Young is careful about that. Credentials carry genuine social value, research environments matter, and learning alongside peers changes what gets learned. But it is an argument that the envelope has been conflated with the letter inside it.
What he found afterward was predictable in some ways and not in others. The knowledge held. What surprised him was how often, in interviews and applications, nobody asked what he actually knew — only where the piece of paper came from.
