She got demoted the year before her idea saved the world
Katalin Karikó spent decades being pushed toward the exits of academic science for chasing mRNA. In 2023 she got the Nobel Prize for it.
In 1995, the University of Pennsylvania demoted Katalin Karikó. She had spent years failing to win grants for a line of research almost nobody else in biochemistry wanted to fund: using messenger RNA, the molecule that tells cells which proteins to build, as a therapy delivery system rather than studying it in the abstract. Reviewers kept turning her down. The university, by her own later account, deprioritized and underfunded the work, and she was never granted tenure there.
She kept going anyway, for a simple, almost stubborn reason: she thought the biochemistry was sound, even when the institutions funding biochemistry disagreed. The breakthrough she and immunologist Drew Weissman eventually published, a way to chemically modify RNA so the body's immune system wouldn't destroy it on contact, sat mostly ignored for years after it appeared in print.
That modification became the mechanical core of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines. In 2023, Karikó and Weissman received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, less than three decades after a university had decided her research wasn't worth a tenured position.
The gap between her demotion and her Nobel wasn't a comeback story with a clean arc. It was one scientist continuing to run an experiment nobody was funding, for exactly as long as it took the rest of the field to need the answer.
