Switching tasks doesn't clear your head. It leaves a residue
A 2009 study measured what's actually left in your mind after you move to the next thing without finishing the last one.
In 2009, management researcher Sophie Leroy ran a series of experiments asking a simple question nobody had tested cleanly before: when you leave one task unfinished and switch to another, does your mind actually switch with you?
Her subjects worked on a task, then were interrupted — sometimes after finishing, sometimes mid-stream — and moved to a second task. The ones pulled off an unfinished task performed measurably worse on the new one, and follow-up probes showed why: their thoughts kept drifting back to the task they'd left hanging. Leroy called this attention residue — a portion of working memory that stays attached to the old problem even while you're staring at the new one.
The fix that worked in her data wasn't willpower. It was closure. Subjects who finished the first task before switching, or who were given a moment to write down where they'd left off and what came next, showed far less residue. The mind doesn't need the task done. It needs a place to set it down.
Which reframes the modern workday's real cost. It's not the twenty minutes lost to an interruption. It's the twenty minutes after that, spent only half-present, still holding a thread from three tasks ago because nobody let you tie it off.
