Researchers discovered a second major period of neural growth beginning somewhere around age fifteen and continuing through the twenties. During this window, the brain rewires itself toward frontal-lobe thinking -- the part responsible for weighing probability, planning across time, and sitting with uncertainty rather than demanding a yes-or-no answer right now.
Meg Jay, a clinical psychologist at the University of Virginia and author of The Defining Decade, works exclusively with twentysomethings. Her core argument is that "30 is the new 20" is not an encouraging idea -- it's a developmental error. The brain's plasticity during this period means habits, skills, and ways of relating to the world are being set with unusual durability. Work done to build what Jay calls identity capital -- skills, experiences, and relationships that create future options -- compounds in ways that become harder to replicate in the thirties.
