The monkeys who didn't need the raisin

A 1949 primate study accidentally broke the two theories psychologists had for why anyone does anything.

Harry Harlow, a University of Wisconsin psychologist, gave eight rhesus monkeys a simple mechanical puzzle — pull a pin, undo a hook, lift a cover — and expected them to ignore it until he trained them with rewards. Instead the monkeys started solving it immediately, with no instruction and no prize, and got faster every day. By day thirteen, they were cracking it in under a minute most of the time.

This broke the two explanations psychology had for behavior at the time: biological drives like hunger, and external rewards like food or praise. Neither applied — nobody fed them for solving it. So Harlow proposed something almost heretical for 1949: a third drive, intrinsic motivation, where the doing is the reward. Then he tested whether adding a treat would make the monkeys even better at it. It made them worse. Adding the raisin actually disrupted a performance that curiosity alone had already produced.

Daniel Pink built much of Drive around this half-forgotten result, arguing that the same disruption happens to humans handed a bonus for work they already found absorbing.
