Two trees standing apart are rarely standing alone
Peter Wohlleben's forestry memoir argues that what looks like silent competition underground is closer to rationing.
The standard picture of a forest is Darwinian: roots fighting roots for the same finite water, every tree quietly trying to starve its neighbor. Peter Wohlleben, a German forester, spent decades watching the opposite happen and wrote The Hidden Life of Trees to explain what he'd seen.
Tree roots link to thread-like fungal filaments in the soil, forming a network researchers call mycorrhizal — the trees trade sugar for water and minerals the fungi are better at finding. That network doesn't stop at one tree. It runs between them, and older, taller trees — sometimes called mother trees — push sugar through it to seedlings too shaded to photosynthesize enough on their own. Wohlleben found a beech stump, felled centuries earlier, still faintly green under the bark: its neighbors had kept feeding it long after it stopped being able to feed itself.
The forest isn't a crowd of individuals racing for the same light. It's closer to a household quietly deciding who eats first this week.
Wohlleben's harder claim, the one that unsettled foresters: managed timber plantations, planted in tidy rows without these old connections, may simply be worse at surviving drought. Efficiency, it turns out, was never the same thing as resilience.
