Venice was building a warship a day 400 years before Ford
The Venetian Arsenal ran an assembly line staffed by 16,000 workers — and its real innovation wasn't speed, it was traceability.
By the early 1500s, the Venetian Republic's state shipyard — the Arsenal — employed roughly 16,000 people and could complete a war galley at a pace close to one per day, standardized enough that a damaged ship in the fleet could be repaired with interchangeable parts pulled from Arsenal stock. Ships moved along a canal through the complex, picking up hull, rigging, and armament at successive stations, four centuries before Henry Ford applied the same logic to automobiles.
The speed gets the attention, but the more interesting management decision was upstream of it. Every component the Arsenal produced — rope, sail, timber, ironwork — was marked and tracked back to the worker or workshop that made it. If a rope failed at sea, the Arsenal's records could trace it to the exact rope-walk and crew responsible.
That traceability is what made standardization survivable at scale. Mass production without accountability just multiplies whatever's wrong; the Arsenal's marking system meant a defect surfaced fast and pointed somewhere specific, so the fix happened at the source instead of the fleet finding out at the worst possible moment.
Modern manufacturing rediscovered this as "quality control" and treated it as a 20th-century invention. Venice had it running for state security reasons a thousand years earlier: speed without a way to trace failure back to its source isn't efficiency. It's just risk, produced faster.
