Your brain makes emotions — it doesn't find them
Neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett upended a century of assumption with a single question: what if anger and sadness have no fixed address in the brain?
For most of the twentieth century, scientists searched for the neural seat of fear, the circuit for joy. The amygdala became shorthand for the emotion centre. Textbooks drew tidy boxes: reason here, feeling there.
Barrett's research over two decades demolished that map. Her theory of constructed emotion, laid out in How Emotions Are Made, holds that your brain is not a passive receiver of emotional signals from the body. It is a prediction machine, constantly generating hypotheses about what's happening and why. When your heart pounds before a presentation, your brain reaches into past experience to classify that sensation — and the category it lands on (dread? excitement? caffeine?) shapes what you actually feel.
Emotion, on this account, is less a thing you have and more an act your brain performs. Two people in the same situation — heart rate elevated, hands cold — may construct entirely different emotional experiences depending on the concepts available to them.
The implication is unsettling and liberating in equal measure. You cannot entirely trust your emotional read of a situation as a direct report from your nervous system. But you can, with practice, expand your emotional vocabulary — what Barrett calls emotional granularity — and in doing so, give your brain more precise categories to construct from. The finer-grained the concept, the more specifically the brain can act.
